She shrugs a shoulder, wetting her lips before playing an experimental few notes, then moving into the first notes of one of Jon's songs for a second.
Okay, she can do this.
"I'd rather see what's available at the next port. He doesn't like requests for me. And make sure you ask for exactly what trees Hunter wants, or Himself'll probably give you trees already cut for lumber or some bullshit."
He tries to remember his moves, the way he had raised up on his feet, but it's slower, clumsy, and he ends up trying to do a turn, stumbling, and laughing as he lands on a pillow.
"I know! No, no, though, it gets better. Wait, wait, I'll get it, check that Kaz is out, you have to see this." She scrambles to her feet, leaving her flute on the table as she runs out into the yard to root around in her queen hive.
She pops back up with a case, well-wrapped in plastic wrap. The bees have tried building comb on it, but she chips it off with a thumbnail so she can unwrap her treasure - a disc case, with "Watch Me!" in lightning-crawl letters across a picture of a dark and empty stage.
"I found it in the library and hid it so no one else would. Remember I showed you a documentary before?"
She nods with a wobble of her head - partial yes - already heading back inside. "It's about the Mechanism. He's a performer with powers, has this whole pretending-to-be-an-alien-pirate persona. But his real name is Jonny D'Ville."
"He's good, and he's really fun, which is maybe more important than being really good." She chuckles, heading back inside. "You don't have to watch the whole thing - it's got a lot of stuff about how his old band fell apart after he triggered - but there's most of a concert on here at the end, that's worth watching."
She heads back inside, to pull the cushions out in front of the TV and get set up.
She nods, and queues it up to the beginning then. Putting a butterfly out in the corridor to watch for Kaz, she settles into the cushions, leaning on Rags to watch.
And yep, in the grittiness of early digital video, there's a young Jonathan Sims, sitting on the counter of a public bathroom applying his eye make-up while the voiceover talks about college, about that young man's plans for a degree, a future, an ordinary life.
